I love the new HBO show “True Blood.” I’ve always been a fan of vampires, and yes I am aware how weird that sounds. I’ve loved the movie “Interview with the Vampire” since I was 12, probably even younger. What can I say I was in love with Brad Pitt? We’ll cover my lax parents some other time.
Anyway, back to “True Blood,” it takes place in today’s society but vampires are real and have “come out of the coffin” with the advent of synthetic blood. The show is from Alan Ball, creator of the hit HBO series “Six Feet Under.” It really is a great show but I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll focus on how creepy HBO has been promoting it.
On HBO.com you can watch a news expose on vampires in America, you can watch an American and French commercial for Tru Blood, a commercial for the American Vampire League, a pro vampire group, and one for the Fellowship of the Sun, an anti-vampire group. Not only can you see these extras but HBO has also been running print ads saying: “FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRINK FRIENDS.” “ALL FLAVOR. NO BITE.” “REAL BLOOD IS FOR SUCKERS.” “SUCK ON THIS.”
The people at HBO even went as far as creating a website for Tru Blood, trubeaverage.com. This site takes creepy to a whole new level. When you go to the website you have to enter the month, day, and century you were turned. Then you can see a description of all the blood types, A, B, AB, and O. You can also take a quiz to see which type would be best for you; I’d prefer Type A “The Cultivated Aesthete.” You can also see the ads, download wallpaper and screensavers, and buddy icons.
Oh did I mention you can shop at truebeaverage.com? You can buy Tru Blood shirts, sweatshirts, a glass, a coffee mug, ladies boy briefs, and even a onsie for your baby. You can also, on HBO.com, buy a Merlotte’s (the town’s bar) tee, coffee mug, shot glasses, and beer mug. Don’t get me wrong I know every TV show has merchandise but you’ve got to admit it’s a bit creepy just how far HBO has taken this. All that being said however, “True Blood” is a great show and you show defiantly check it out.
