My itunes is scaring me

Published by queenofmyworld at 8:31 pm under Thoughts Edit This

Okay so the latest version of iTunes scares me. Its iTunes 8 and it has a thing called Genius. When I opened it up to see what the heck this new thing was it said this: “Genius makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together. The Genius sidebar recommends music from the iTunes store that you don’t already have. Turning on Genius will send information about your iTunes to library to Apple.”

Am I the only one who finds this creepy? I don’t want my iTunes creating playlists by itself that is really weird. I mean it’s the same reason I never got a TiVo I don’t want appliances making suggestions for me. A DVR never suggests things for you. If CDs weren’t basically obsolete these days I’d go back to listening to my music on them, but you’ve got to admit having an Ipod is so much more convenient, it puts all your music in one place. Oh well I guess the only thing I can do is not turn the stupid program on and hope that my iTunes doesn’t automatically update and the next version of iTunes doesn’t automatically turns on Genius.

I heard someone was working on a program that would make music based on what people like to hear. Doesn’t that completely take out the element of art in the music? I agree with you on this one, sometimes technology can go too far.

The Genius application is kind of weird, but it makes some good playlists. I’m not sure how the technology works.
